Metal Detector Function & Reject Check

In a cheese plant the metal detector is usually a critical control point: the last place a lost knife bolt, a wire fragment or a chip off a guillotine is caught before it ships. Operators run test pieces through it every shift. Maintenance's monthly check is the other half — that the reject device actually removes what the head finds, the bin is locked, the line stops on a fault, and nobody has quietly changed the validated settings.

The Procedure

The steps ChatterFix schedules for this PM. Every step is a checkable item on the work order — a technician can speak their way through it without touching a keyboard.

  1. Record the sensitivity settings on screen and confirm they match QA's validated settings — do not change them
  2. Pass each certified test piece (ferrous, non-ferrous, stainless) through the centre of the aperture and confirm every one is rejected
  3. Confirm the reject device fires into a locked reject bin, and the line stops on a bin-full or reject fault
  4. Inspect test pieces for damage and check their certificates are in date
  5. Record the results for QA; any missed reject means product since the last good check is on hold

Why This PM Exists

In a cheese plant the metal detector is usually a critical control point: the last place a lost knife bolt, a wire fragment or a chip off a guillotine is caught before it ships. Operators run test pieces through it every shift. Maintenance's monthly check is the other half — that the reject device actually removes what the head finds, the bin is locked, the line stops on a fault, and nobody has quietly changed the validated settings.

What Skipping It Looks Like

The head still alarms on the test piece, so the check passes, but the reject arm is slow and the product carries on down the line. Or sensitivity was turned down to stop false rejects on wet product and never recorded. Either way it surfaces as a customer complaint, with every block since the last good check in question.

Setting the interval

Monthly for the mechanical and settings check, alongside operators' test-piece checks at start-up, changeover and through the shift as the HACCP plan sets. A missed reject puts product since the last good check on hold. Settings belong to QA; this check records them, it does not set them.

Common Questions

How often should this PM run?
Monthly. Monthly for the mechanical and settings check, alongside operators' test-piece checks at start-up, changeover and through the shift as the HACCP plan sets. A missed reject puts product since the last good check on hold. Settings belong to QA; this check records them, it does not set them.
How long does it take?
Budget about 1.0 hour for a technician working to the standard procedure. ChatterFix uses that estimate for capacity planning, then learns your plant's actual time from completed work orders.
What happens if we skip it?
The head still alarms on the test piece, so the check passes, but the reject arm is slow and the product carries on down the line. Or sensitivity was turned down to stop false rejects on wet product and never recorded. Either way it surfaces as a customer complaint, with every block since the last good check in question.
Can I use this checklist in ChatterFix?
Yes — this exact procedure ships in the Dairy & Cheese Processing industry pack. Pick your industry at signup and it is scheduled on the right assets automatically, with no configuration.
