Cheese Vat Agitator & Gearbox Service

The vat agitator runs in product, often for hours per make, and its knives and frames are fastened into the milk. A leaking shaft seal or a weeping gearbox puts lubricant toward the product; a loose fastener or cracked frame is a foreign-material event in a vat of cheese. The monthly service is as much a food-safety check as a mechanical one.

The Procedure

The steps ChatterFix schedules for this PM. Every step is a checkable item on the work order — a technician can speak their way through it without touching a keyboard.

  1. Apply LOTO on the agitator drive
  2. Check gearbox oil level and condition; top up with food-grade (H1) oil only
  3. Inspect shaft seals for leakage toward the product side
  4. Check knives, frames and fasteners for cracks or anything missing — a lost fastener in a vat is a foreign-material event
  5. Run the agitator after release and record noise, vibration and amp draw

Why This PM Exists

A leaking shaft seal or a weeping gearbox puts lubricant toward the product; a loose fastener or cracked frame is a foreign-material event in a vat of cheese. What Skipping It Looks Like

Gearbox oil gets topped up with whatever is on the shelf, seals weep a little more each week, and a knife bolt backs out between makes. The failure that finally gets noticed is the expensive one: a metal detector reject, a customer complaint, or a gearbox that seizes mid-make with a full vat.

Setting the interval

Monthly for vats making daily; weekly visual checks of knives and fasteners by the operator are worth building into pre-op. Use food-grade H1 oil only, and record amp draw so a change in load shows up as a trend.

Common Questions

How often should this PM run?
