Cream Separator Bowl Service

A separator bowl spins at very high speed with product and a sludge discharge cycle running through it. Seal wear shows up as poor skimming and product loss; a cracked or corroded bowl part is a serious mechanical hazard. A scheduled bowl service with the OEM's tools and torque values keeps separation efficiency up and catches damage while it is still a part, not an incident.

The Procedure

The steps ChatterFix schedules for this PM. Every step is a checkable item on the work order — a technician can speak their way through it without touching a keyboard.

  1. Apply LOTO and confirm the bowl has come to a complete stop — separator bowls run down for many minutes after power is removed
  2. Disassemble the bowl with the OEM tools only; record disc stack, seal and sliding-piston condition
  3. Check bowl parts for corrosion, cracks and erosion — any crack means the part is retired, never re-used
  4. Reassemble to the OEM torque and alignment marks and record the sludge-discharge test result on start-up

Why This PM Exists

What Skipping It Looks Like

Skim fat creeps up and nobody connects it to the separator until yield is reviewed. Discharges get irregular, seals leak, and eventually a bowl is opened reactively — often by someone in a hurry, which is exactly when run-down time and bowl-handling rules get skipped.

Setting the interval

The OEM's running-hour interval is the authority; quarterly is a reasonable calendar backstop for a single-shift plant. Skim fat trend and discharge behaviour are the signals to pull it forward.

Common Questions

How often should this PM run?
Quarterly. The OEM's running-hour interval is the authority; quarterly is a reasonable calendar backstop for a single-shift plant. Skim fat trend and discharge behaviour are the signals to pull it forward.
How long does it take?
Budget about 3.0 hours for a technician working to the standard procedure. ChatterFix uses that estimate for capacity planning, then learns your plant's actual time from completed work orders.
What happens if we skip it?
Skim fat creeps up and nobody connects it to the separator until yield is reviewed. Discharges get irregular, seals leak, and eventually a bowl is opened reactively — often by someone in a hurry, which is exactly when run-down time and bowl-handling rules get skipped.
Can I use this checklist in ChatterFix?
Yes — this exact procedure ships in the Dairy & Cheese Processing industry pack. Pick your industry at signup and it is scheduled on the right assets automatically, with no configuration.
